This incredible clear Quartz point is unpolished at one end and nestles inside a custom black metal stand. Due to the nature of the ‘blue needle’ inclusions, this was hard for me to photograph. These appear has ethereal blue sunbursts or multiple lines. These are more noticeable when light is directed at the Quartz.
What we are referring to as “blue needles” are the blue needle like lines that appear when light is directed at the quartz. What you are seeing actually are not “needles” at all. They are very thin lines of trapped gasses.
Due to the Tyndall Effect these thin lines appear blue. The Tyndall effect is light scattering by particles in a colloid or in a very fine suspension. This is similar to Rayleigh scattering. The blue light that you see is blue light wavelength that is scattered much more strongly than red.
