Botryoidal hematite, often called “kidney ore,” is a variety of hematite, a mineral form of iron oxide, and is found in Morocco, known for its globular, bubbly appearance formed by layered growth around a nucleus.
The “kidney ore” appearance results from the layered growth of hematite around a central nucleus, like a speck of sand or dust. As more material is deposited, these spheres grow larger and eventually overlap.
